Sutton’s Nursery Reveal

The moment I found out I was pregnant with a girl, my mind started re-decorating the nursery. When I put the room together for Miles it was full of neutral tones (shocking, I know), but after living in that space for three years, I was ready for change. It took me some time to figure out where I wanted to pull design inspiration from but it all came together when we were in Europe over the summer.

While in Zurich, Jon Luke and I stumbled upon an old vintage shop where I fell in love with an Hermes scarf. I had no place for this in our current home but I loved the idea of holding onto it until the time was right. That said, I then started to think about how this scarf would be so cute in a nursery for a baby boy. I did not know the gender at that time so I began to play on this design and (getting a little ahead of myself) started to look for furniture. The scarf I found in Europe was full of deep jewel tones of burgundy, navy and dark green so I started down the path of that color palette.

This vision led me to this dresser from McGee and Co. I had my eye on this piece for quite some time but could not envision the perfect space in our home. Well, clearly I was convinced I was having a baby boy at this point because I continued to dive down the rabbit hole of décor and build out this space for who I thought was going to be Miles’ little brother.

Now, fast forward a few weeks to our gender reveal, you can imagine my surprise when pink confetti came out of the cannons. I was shocked! And honestly stressed because I was loving the design I had going for the nursery. So after much debate in my head about continuing with my design or starting over, I decided I wanted to pivot because I needed to add blush tones in the space. I have never been one for much color but blush has always been something I envisioned using if we ever had a girl and I just could not let that go. So…I dove back in to Pinterest and stumbled upon yet another vintage Hermes scarf online. This one however was a beautiful mix of blush, cream and shades of green and I think I cried tears of joy because the vision I had been working on immediately shifted into a beautiful space for our sweet baby girl!

Prior to shift into a more feminine space, I had been debating on adding wainscoting to the room. Honestly, I wanted to do this before Miles was born but talked myself out of it so this time around…I was committed. I found a seller on Etsy that was perfect for this project and made it easy (or easier at least) for us to instill ourselves. All I had to do was send measurements and pictures of the walls and they cut and labeled everything for us. Then, while I was about six months pregnant, Jon Luke and I did the install…and thankfully our relationship survived. It took a little more time than anticipated but we got it done and were ready for paint. Now, here is where I almost lost Jon Luke again because I was determined to paint the ceiling. Yep, just the ceiling. I wanted the room to feel light and bright which landed me on white walls, but I still needed that beautiful blush tone to complete the space and not feel too bright. So I went for it. We painted and I was IN LOVE.

Now that the wainscoting and paint were complete, I had to finish the décor piece. I had my new scarf framed in a beautiful light wood frame, and was still committed to the green dresser. Now, you might be asking why I did not want to keep anything from Miles’ nursery? Well one, my baby girl design took on a whole new look and I was committed to that, but two, a friend of mine wanted to buy everything in his room for her own nursery so it all worked out! That said, the next piece I committed to was this crib. I loved the lighter wood, but also the subtle pink hues it pulls in certain light. Next, I needed storage. In the old nursery, I had floating shelves next to the window which looked beautiful, but they were not functional at all. In fact, books would fall off of them so I decided to remove those and opt for a beautiful cabinet instead. I found this one at McGee and Co and loved the creamy option for her room. (Originally I was looking at something like this but darker when I thought I was decorating for a little boy.) I actually am thankful that I went with the creamy option because it fits the space so much better! And it provides the perfect amount of storage!

Once I had solidified the larger pieces for the room, it was time to select a new glider. This was going to be a crucial decision for me because I knew this time around I wanted on that reclined as well. The glider I had for Miles was comfortable and beautiful, but I often found myself rocking him after a long day and just wanted to sit back a little bit. I came across this option on social media and fell in love with the look. After doing a little digging, I spoke with a few people who confirmed that it was in fact comfortable and made my decision. Now things were complete and all I had to do was wait for things to ship. You can imagine I was so anxious!

Once everything was delivered and hung, I absolutely love how this room came together. It is the perfect combination of soft feminine touches and classic timeless pieces. What I love most about this space is how it does not feel too much like a nursery, but rather a room I would keep in my home even after she grows up. I could see each of these pieces either growing with her as her style evolves, but also living somewhere else in our home as we continue to grow and re-design. The options are endless but overall I LOVE this space!
