My Capsule Wardrobe

Creating a curated and intentional closet is something I have focused on since becoming a mom of two. Quality over quantity is my mantra when it comes to filling my wardrobe, and starting with a solid capsule wardrobe really helped me create this intentionality. During my maternity leave, I was consistent with cleaning out my closets (multiple times) to weed out the things that I do not wear enough. It was extremely helpful to re-visit my space once a week, or every other week, to ensure I was not holding on to something in the moment. Once I felt my closet had been trimmed of the “excess”, I was able to start creating the perfect capsule wardrobe! Now remember, that your capsule wardrobe is a good base for your style. These items will be the things you wear most often and can be interchangeable most easily. You will still have items that do not fit into your capsule wardrobe and that is okay, but this is a good technique to figure out where you want to start investing quality over quantity. Here is a breakdown of my capsule wardrobe right now!

When building out my capsule wardrobe, I started with my tops. What options did I have that I could add to my weekly rotation most often? What items did I prefer to others? Then once solidified, which brands do I prefer within those areas? It was a lot to think about but here it what I landed on:

Tops & Outerwear

  1. Black/white tank – I went with black because I was able to go further with it when selecting outfits. Finding an option that is structured, fits you well and you feel confident in is great!
  2. A good white tee – You can never go wrong with a classic white tee. Again, investing in an option that is high quality, will last wear after wear and can be styled many ways is great!
  3. Black tee – For the same reasons as above but adding options.
  4. Black vest – This will not be for everyone, but after returning to work I found myself gravitating towards my vests often.
  5. Neutral vest – Again, same as above.
  6. White button down – You can never go wrong with a classic white button down!
  7. Black button down – Because I am at the office five days out of the week, I need options here.
  8. Blue/denim button down – Same as above.
  9. Neutral crew neck sweatshirt – This is good to have on hand for spring in case of cooler temps but also to add some versatility to your everyday wear. I opted for one with a little bit of text to add some flair!
  10. Neutral sweater – Similar line of thinking as above, but I also like this to throw around my shoulders!
  11. Black blazer – I mean, do I need to elaborate?
  12. Neutral blazer – Again, I am spending so much time in the office, it was nice to work into my rotation!
  13. Neutral trench coat – A nice touch for spring but come summer, I would swap this for something else.

Bottoms & Shoes

  1. Cream or denim midi skirt – I wanted something that was office appropriate but also a fun weekend option. I am loving cream/ecru shades right now so I went that route!
  2. Denim – A good classic pair of denim that can be dressed up or down is key.
  3. White Denim – Same as above but white for spring/summer.
  4. Black trousers – Versatile, but comfy. Go straight from work to happy hour!
  5. Neutral trousers – I like options.
  6. Sneakers – Tried to keep my shoes minimal here with an option from each category.
  7. Loafers/flat – I went with a black loafer right now because again, super versatile. I also have a chocolate brown pair that I could easily swap out.
  8. Sandals – My Hermes sandals are my go-to.
  9. Classic heel – I opted for a classic cream heel but your options are endless!

Remember, your capsule wardrobe might look different from everyone else’s because it is about where you are in your life. If you are working in an office, you might lean more towards work appropriate items. If you work from home, you might be able to work in more denim. Think about what fits your needs, what you wear the most, and go from there!
