During the month of January (while I was still at home on maternity leave), I decided to challenge myself to a “30 outfits in 30 days” reel series on Instagram. You may have followed along on social media, or you may be reading about it for the first time, but it started as something that was going to keep me entertained during maternity leave and ended up forcing me to think a lot about what was in my closet. As I spent the month curating looks, I often found myself gravitating towards the same items. I learned that I was clearly drawn to specific pieces in my closet and began to think about what my ideal capsule wardrobe would look like. All that to say, I spent the month of February truly trying to figure out said capsule wardrobe and plan on sharing that soon, but in the meantime, here are a few things I learned during 30 outfits in 30 days.
First, it is clear that I gravitate towards neutrals. Just about the only color I wore during the month of January was olive green, which might as well be a neutral shade. I am just not drawn to color and never opted for it when I was picking my outfits. That said, there were several things in my closet I was able to say goodbye to because realistically, I was never going to wear them.
Second, my jeans fit differently. This is mostly due to birthing two children, but getting dressed everyday forced me to see that my body has stylistically outgrown my jeans, as well as physically. Skinny jeans were no longer something I loved seeing on my body but rather a straight or wide leg. So out with the old and in with the new!
Third, I love a blazer moment. I decided that my go-to outfit (the one you always select when you can’t decide what to wear) is a blazer, tee or bodysuit and jeans. So with that said, I want to make sure I am investing in blazers that will last. Quality, not quantity.
Fourth, my trousers can go much further than the office. I loved creating more casual looks with my trousers and taking them to places other than work!
Finally, I will now admit that I am more of a pants girl. It was rare that I styled a dress or skirt. This means I gravitate towards pants but I also might want to try some new things heading into spring!
Overall, this was a great exercise if you are trying to figure out more about what you like and don’t like style wise. It helped me clean out, curate and create (or start creating) the best wardrobe for me!
